Winning formula: Waynesboro business owner collecting food for mothers - The Daily Progress

A Waynesboro business did its part to help mothers in need during the government shutdown.

From apple juice, to milk-based powder formula, a table full of supplies sits at Illuminating Styles Barber & Beauty Salon. Although the shutdown ended this weekend, people who need help recovering are encouraged to stop by the salon.

Illuminating Styles Barber & Beauty Salon owner Tamika Derozen started the baby formula drive after seeing a Facebook post about a local person in need.

“I woke up and there was someone on my timeline saying they didn’t know how they were going to feed their children because WIC was closed,” she said of how the fundraiser started.

Women, Infants and Children is a nutrition program that aims to help mothers and young children eat properly and stay healthy.

Illuminating Styles Barber & Beauty Salon’s drive started about a week ago when salon staff and community members began bringing in donations.

With a table full of supplies, Derozen is hopeful those in need will visit her salon.

“I won’t ask them for any documents,” Derozen said. “I just ask they just take what they need. Anybody — people on food stamps, government workers, young mothers who just delivered — just come on in.”

Illuminating Styles Barber & Beauty Salon is at 200 East Main Street in Waynesboro.
