A Kalamazoo native and longtime community contributor Linda Mary Sawall has died, according to an obituary posted online from Langeland Family Funeral Homes. She was 77.

Sawall was mostly known through the community as owner of Sawall Health Foods alongside her husband, Robert. Sawall and her husband purchased the original location of the health foods store in downtown Kalamazoo from her father-in-law, Gordon, in 1979. Since then, the store expanded to hold eight separate locations, where she "cared enormously about the customers who shopped at her store developing life-long friendships with many of them," according to her obituary.

Included in her ventures through the health food stores, Sawall also opened two Kalamazoo restaurants, including the Oakwood Bistro in 1997 and Cafe '36 in 2017.

Sawall is lauded as "one of Michigan's most innovative female entrepreneurs in the local food movement," per her obituary.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, of 53 years; her two sons, Robert and Mark alongside their spouses; and six grandchildren.

Memorials in Sawall's memory may be directed to First Church of Christ Scientist at 1225 Portage St. in Kalamazoo.
